1 σύν
σύν, altatt.
A.; von Personen, noc hdazu, außerdem, ἡ ὄρνις αὐχέν' ἀπεκρέμασεν, σὺν δὲ πτερὰ πυκνὰ λίασϑεν, Il. 23, 879; σὺν δ' αὕτως ἐγώ, Soph. Ant. 85; u. so σὺν δέ auch andere Tragiker, z. Ch. 453; Ag. 752; u. sp. Ep., wie Ap. Rh. 4, 1166 Arat.
Trach. 256, u. sonst. Doch auch den Andern unterordnend, von Dienern, vom Gefolge, ἀναβᾶσα σὺν ἀμφιπόλοισι, Od. 17, 49; u. bes. von dem begleitenden oder folgenden Kriegsheere, εἰ ξὺν λοχίταις εἴτε καὶ μονοστιβῆ; Aesch. Ch. 757; u. so in Prosa, bes. Xen. u. Sp., Μένων καὶ οἱ σὺν αὐτῷ, und seine Soldaten, Xen. An. 1, 2, 15, vollständig οἱ σὺν αὐτῷ στρατιῶται 2, 6, 14; ἡ σὺν ἐμοὶ στρατιά, 2, 5, 25; Πέρσαι καὶ οἱ σὺν αὐτοῖς, mit ihrem Anhange, den ihnen unterworfenen Völkern, 3, 2, 11; – u. bes. den Begleiter als den Helfer, Beistand bezeichnend, durch dessen Vermittelung man Etwas erreicht oder ausführt, ξὺν σοὶ τὰ Τροίας πεδία πορϑῆσαι, Soph. Phil. 908, u. sonst; dah. σύν τινι στρατεύεσϑαι, als Bundesgenosse, Xen. An. 7, 3, 10; u. so bes. unter dem schützenden Geleit, unter Beistand eines Gottes, Μενέλαος ἐνίκησε σὺν Ἀϑήνῃ, Il. 3, 439. 10, 290; σὺν γὰρ ϑεῷ εἰλήλουϑμεν, 9, 49, wie auch wir sagen »mit Gott«, nach seinem Willen und unter seinem Schutze; σύν γε ϑεοῖσιν, 21, 430, vgl. 11, 792. 15, 403. 20, 192 Od. 8, 493. 13, 391. 16, 260; σὺν ϑεῷ, σὺν ϑεοῖς, Pind. N. 8, 17 Ol. 8, 14; u. so Tragg. u. in Prosa überall; vgl. noch Ἀρτέμιδος εὐνοίαισι σύν τ' ἄλλοις ϑεοῖς Aesch. Med. 625, wie Ar. Plut. 115 u. in Prosa öfter; vgl. Cyr. 7, 5, 77, sie sind auf unserer Seite, für uns; u. so σύν τινι γίγνεσϑαι oder εἶναι, auf Jem. 3, 1, 18, der auch μάχεσϑαι σύν τινι, »in Gemeinschaft mit Jem.« sagt, während bei Soph. ὁ σὺν γυναιξὶ τὰς μάχας ποιούμενος, El. 294, heißt »der gegen Weiber kämpft«. Herc. F. 1303; auch in Prosa einzeln, σὺν ὅπλοις, Xen. Cyr. 3, 3, 54; auch σὺν μαχαίρᾳ μάχεσϑαι, 2, 1, 21. – Damit sind zu vergleichen : σὺν βοῇ παρίσταται, Aesch. Cyr. 3, 1, 15; u. ähnl. Gorg. 513 a. Legg. XI, 927 a, mit, gemäß den Gesetzen; Xen. Cyr. 1, 3, 17; σὺν τῷ δικαίῳ, 8, 2, 23 An. 2, 6, 18 u. sonst, der Gerechtigkeit entsprechend, gerecht; ὡς ἑκάστους σὺν τῇ ἀξίᾳ ἐτίμησεν, Arr. An. 2, 12; u. so in Umschreibung eines adv. übergehend, σὺν σπουδῇ ταχύς, Soph. Phil. 1207, σὺν τάχει μολών, schnell, 860; σὺν τῷ καλῷ, auf eine edle Weise, u. ä., vgl. Jacobs Philostr. imagg. p. 615.
– 2) Vollendung einer Handlung, ganz, durchaus, συμπληρόω, συντέμνω. – 3) bei Zahlwörtern ist es distributiv, σὺν δύο, je zwei.

The form ξύν rarely occurs in Hom., though it is not rare in compds. even when not required by the metre, as in ξυνέαξα, ξυνοχῇσιν, ξύμβλητο, ξύμπαντα; Hes. also uses ξύμπας, ξυνιέναι; in [dialect] Ion. verse we findξύν Thgn.1063

, Democr.95 (cf. ἀξύνετος, ἀξυνεσίη, ξύνεσις), and in the phrase ξὺν νῷ ( νόῳ codd.) Heraclit.114, Democr.35; Hdt. has only σύν, and in codd. Hp. ξύν has weaker authority than σύν (i p.cxxv Kuehlewein); in the late Ionic of Aret., ξύν prevails over σύν; in [dialect] Aeol. and [dialect] Dor. it is rare,ξυνοίκην Sapph.75

Inscrr. ξύν is the only form up to 500 B.C.; σύν appears in v B.C. and becomes usual towards the end; after 378 B.C. ξύν survives only in the formula γνώμην δὲ ξυμβάλλεσθαι κτλ.; the phrase ξὺν νῷ is found in Ar.Nu. 580, Pl.Cri. 48c, Men. 88b, R. 619b (); otherwise, of [dialect] Att. Prose writers Th. alone uses the preposition ξύν, Antipho and Lysias have ξυν- a few times in compds.; codd. Pl. have both ξυν- (Lg. 930a, al.) and συν-; in Antipho Soph.Oxy.1364, Aristox., Arr., Ael., and Anon.Rhythm. ξυν- is very freq.; in Trag. both forms occur. The Prep. σύν gradually gave way to μετά with gen., so that whereas A. has 67 examples of σύν to 8 of μετά with gen., the proportions in Th. are 400 of μετά to 37 of σύν, in D. 346 of μετά to 15 of σύν, and in Arist. 300 of μετά to 8 of σύν: for these and other statistics see C. J. T. Mommsen, Beiträge zur Lehre von den griechischen Präpositionen (Frankfurt 1886-95): in [dialect] Att. Prose and Com. σύν is restricted for the most part to signf. 8, 9 and a few phrases, such as σὺν θεῷ, σὺν (τοῖς) ὅπλοις; Xenophon uses it freely, having 556 examples to 275 of μετά; in Pap., NT, and later Prose its use is much less restricted (v. infr.).1 in company with, together with,δεῦρό ποτ' ἤλυθε.. σ. (e.g. συστῆναι), before ζ, and perh. sts. before ξ. In a poet. passage, ap.Pl.Phdr. 237a, we have ξύμ alone in tmesi, ξύμ μοι λάβεσθε for συλλάβεσθέ μοι; cf.ὅτε ξὺμ πρῶτ' ἐφύοντο Emp.95
: in Inscrr. and Papyri these assimilations are freq. not found. -
